Giant Step Presents Afrika Bambaataa @ Hudson Hotel

Monday May 18 7:00 PM
Hudson Hotel
356 W 58th St. New York, NY 10019

You must RSVP for this free event.

About Afrika Bambaataa

Giant Step's biweekly DJ series at Hudson Hotel presents Afrika Bambaataa on Monday, May 18th.

Giant Step welcomes back one of hip hop's three main originators of break-beat deejaying, Afrika Bambaataa, respectfully known as the "Grandfather" and "Godfather" of Hip Hop Culture as well as The Father of The Electro Funk Sound. Through his co-opting of the street gang the Black Spades into the music and culture-oriented Zulu Nation, he is responsible for spreading rap and hip-hop culture throughout the world. Afrika has consistently made records nationally and internationally, every one to two years, spanning the 1980's into the next Millennium 2000.

Due to his early use of drum machines and computer sounds, Bam (as he is affectionately known) was instrumental in changing the way R&B and other forms of Black music were recorded. His creation of electro funk, beginning with his piece "Planet Rock," helped fuel the development of other musical genres such as freestyle or Latin freestyle, miami bass, electronica, house, hip house, and early techno.

River to River Festival 2009 Schedule of Events

Founded in 2002, The River To River Festival is a partnership between the Alliance for Downtown NY, World Financial Center, Battery Park City Authority, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Port Authority of NY & NJ, and The Seaport.

The River To River Festival takes place each summer from June through August, in a variety of public venues that canvas all of Downtown New York - from Chambers Street down to the southern tip of Manhattan and across the island from river to river.

We aim to produce a world-class performing arts festival with a broad sweep of programming and free admission in order to enhance the vitality of cultural life in Lower Manhattan, to support its economic and social health, and to generate new audiences for the arts of our city. By removing barriers to the experience of live arts by free admission and by presentation at popular, mostly outdoor, public venues, we aspire to attract diverse audiences.

The partners founded the Festival following September 11, 2001 with the intention of using the arts as a tool for the revitalization of Lower Manhattan. Our effort, now in its 8th season, has not only assisted in renewal, but has transformed Downtown into a major cultural destination during the summer.
